Pick Your Own Series: Apple Season
By: Jennifer Frost
As every New Englander knows, it occurs quickly and suddenly. You wake up one morning to feel a crisp coolness in the air, which is in stark contrast to the humidity and heat experienced throughout summer, and you just know…Fall has arrived. The arrival of Fall brings so many items to be cherished: state fairs full of entertainment and tasty fried foods; delicious lagers to be sipped; the start of school; and many more items, but none as sweet as apple picking season.
When considering which apples to pick, think about the purposes for those apples. Below please see a helpful chart of the variety of apples and the characteristics of those apples.
Consult these most common varieties to decide what is best to pick at the orchard for you. I get a mix of honeycrisp, cortland and McIntosh. I use the combination of these apples to make applesauce and eat honeycrisp fresh. For my slow cooker applesauce recipe, click here.
